Eating with Ben – Raglan Road

Last night I went to Raglan Road to eat dinner. Raglan Road is in Downtown Disney at the beginning of Pleasure Island. It is an Irish Pub.

My mom and I went to Raglan at about 6:00 p.m. We didn’t have reservations. You don’t need them, but it’s better to try and get them if you have a big party. We actually sat at the counter where you can seat yourself. The restaurant is pretty decent sized and they’re getting ready to do an expansion. The lighting inside is neat and the ceiling has stained glass. There are lots of chairs and tables and a stage where dancers and a band do performances throughout the night. The Raglan Road website says the dancers start in the “early evening”. There are places that you can sit where you can’t see the main stage, but the dancers go to those rooms and do mini performances.

The food at Raglan Road is really good. I ate off of the kids’ menu and I had the “silly steak”. Kids meat is cooked medium well unless you ask to have it cooked another way. I like my steak rare, and our waiter was very nice about me sending the medium-well one back. When I got my new steak it was delicious. I also liked the mashed potatoes because they didn’t have skin in them and I didn’t have to add anything for them to taste good. My mom had chicken risotto. It’s kind of like rice and chicken with some arugula, which is a vegetable like spinach or something. I tried it and it was actually really good. The kids’ menu has things like steak, hamburger, seafood, shepherd’s pie, and macaroni and cheese. You can also get a kid size of the Raglan Risotto. The adult menu has lots of things  and you can find a copy of it here. My mom said it’s about the same price as most sit-down restaurants at Disney.

While we were eating dinner, the Raglan Road dancers started dancing. We also heard the band play some songs. I took some pictures and video.

Here’s me with one of the dancers. She was really nice. We didn’t have to bug her to get a picture with her. Our server asked her for us and she came right over after she was finished talking to a little girl.

I think that Raglan Road is actually a great restaurant for families to go to have fun. Sometimes I see kids after they come out just skipping and dancing down the sidewalk. The food is great, the music and dancing is fun to watch and listen to, and the staff are very, very nice. It’s an awesome place to eat.

Disney Infinity – A Dizkid Gamer Review

Disney Infinity is a video game for all of the newest game consoles like XBOX360, PS3, Wii, and WiiU. Disney says that Disney Infinity is, “an all-new gaming experience that gives players unprecedented freedom and endless opportunities to create stories starring beloved characters from Disney and Pixar’s most popular franchises.” I say that Disney Infinity is a game that lets you do almost anything with your favorite Disney characters.

I got Disney Infinity at Downtown Disney at an early release at Once Upon a Toy. We got there a few minutes before the store opened and we had to line up so that the store wouldn’t be crowded. We only waited about ten minutes.

Once we got inside we went to another line to get the Starter Pack. The Starter Pack (we have an XBOX 360) includes the game, the “Infinity Base” that lets you change characters and worlds and power discs, and Jack Sparrow, Sulley, and Mr. Incredible. It also comes with a clear game piece that generates the 3 worlds: Monsters University, Metroville, and the Caribbean. The Starter Kit was $74.99 and we got a free game piece (Dash) because we bought it early.

Starting the game was pretty easy – I hooked the base up myself. I put the disk in and turned the XBOX on and the game started with me as a ball of light. The narrator started talking and telling a story about imagination. The opening sequence was awesome and my ball of light grew and exploded out into creating a whole bunch of worlds. I saw Rapunzel, Captain Jack Sparrow, Monsters University, and a bunch of other environments. Then Sorcerer Mickey led me to the Toy Box, a place where you collect stuff to build your own race track and a bunch of other things as you play. Each time you go through a PlaySet, you get more things for your Toy Box.

One of the scenes from the opening sequence.

I started by putting Mr. Incredible and the world drive on my base. This let me play as Mr. Incredible in Metroville. I learned that my character needed to complete missions. The game told me how to find out what my missions were and let me know which buttons to press. There were tips I could find in blue bubbles that look like the containers you get in vending machines, new Toy Box items in red bubbles, and costumes in green bubbles. There is an option in the game that lets you have an arrow with you to tell you where to go. I used the arrow a lot because it’s helpful.

After I finished the Incredibles level, I went to Monsters University and Pirates of the Caribbean. The graphics look really good. There is defiinitely a lot of detail. When I was in the Toy Box with the Wreck It Ralph power disk (you can buy power disks separately for $4.99 for a pack of 2), it looked just like I was in Sugar Rush. The race track was even like Airhead Extreme candy! My characters in the game can do lots of stuff. Dash can run super fast and Sulley roars to break things apart. Characters can climb and run and jump and there’s lots of figuring out what to do. I was stuck on one problem in a mission for a pretty long time but I used other characters in the level to help me by “talking” to them.

Image

I would rather play this than other games because it’s not boring at all but it’s also not violent. You can do tons of stuff like build worlds, race cars, finish missions, and complete whole worlds. YOU CAN EVEN SUMMON A KRAKEN! I think the E10+ rating is good because there are guns and cannons and stuff in the game and the way your character dies sometimes can be kind of scary. The game can also be hard when you have to figure things out for missions.

I’m definitely excited to see new playsets like Wreck It Ralph and Cars. Disney says that new characters like Anna and Elsa from the new movie Frozen (November), Rapunzel, Phineas and Ferb, Wreck It Ralph and Vanellope, will start coming out in October. There will also be a PC game and game for tablets like the iPad in October. Be sure to keep the cards that come in your playsets because they have codes to give you characters in these games.

This is the starter pack online card. The code is on the back.

I think this game would be good for girls and boys once more of the girl characters come out. My mom was kind of sad because there weren’t any girl characters besides Violet Incredible and Mrs. Incredible, but there was a girl in line with us that really wanted Monsters, Inc. characters so I think it depends on the girl. This game would make a great gift for kids that aren’t like my friend and want to be outside all the time. It’s a really great game and I’m excited to keep playing.

Splittsville at Downtown Disney

Splitsville is an upscale bowling alley and restaurant in Downtown Disney. It has 30 lanes of bowling, food, pool tables, and a shop. There are also places for adults to have drinks. I went to Splitsville this week and bowled. We didn’t eat there because we ate dinner at Raglan Road. I’ll get to that restaurant in another post.

Image

I wanted to try bowling at Splitsville because I thought it would be fun – I like bowling and I like things at Disney. When we got to the building we went in the front door and to a counter. We asked to bowl and we paid there. We had to buy socks because we didn’t have any with us. The price was twenty dollars per person for one hour plus six dollars each for socks. The total for one hour for me and my mom was almost sixty dollars! My friends decided to go somewhere else while we bowled because it was so expensive. We took an escalator upstairs and went to lane 14. There were tables for eating and seats at our lane. The lady who came upstairs with us told us we had an hour and five minutes to bowl. The extra five minutes was so we could get ready and get our shoes on.

Image

My mom and I bowled almost four games. We couldn’t finish the last game because the hour was up even though we only had one frame left! Bowling there was good because the lanes were nice and there was fun music playing. There were lots of different weights and sizes of bowling balls already on our lane for us. I definitely needed the bumpers because I’m not a really good bowler but my mom didn’t so we asked the lady at the desk upstairs and she set them so that they were up for me but not for my mom. There was even a helper ramp for small kids who couldn’t lift the ball. The family on the lane next to us used it and the little kid looked like he was having a good time.

Image

Overall, Splitsville was good, but I don’t think it was really worth the money. The employees were very nice and the building was clean and shiny, but I was sad that my friend didn’t come with us and I would rather go to Disney Quest or some other place that everyone could go together.

Resort Review: Disney’s Beach Club

IMG_0888I think Beach Club is one of the best resorts at Disney. They have great restaurants there. The lobby is beautiful, especially at Christmas. The rooms are always great and the pool is the biggest and the most amazing one you will ever see at Disney.

Common Areas – The lobby and the shops are great because they’re always really pretty and the shop has lots of stuff you might need. The hotel has a big pin board for trading and during the holidays the lobby is amazing. The front desk staff was really nice when I asked to trade pins and they didn’t make me rush to pick.

This is a picture of the lobby that my mom took.

Restaurants – Beaches and Cream was great ice cream! I had a banana split with my mom after I got done swimming. They let us eat it outside at a table and I didn’t have to change my clothes. The restaurant was really busy but we didn’t have to wait if we wanted to get our ice cream from the to-go window. It was so good!

Cape May Cafe has really good food and will definitely keep you full. There was lots of stuff on the buffet that I like for breakfast but I don’t personally like seafood so we didn’t eat there for dinner. We didn’t have to wait a long time to sit down because we had reservations. The characters had special costumes that look like swimsuits and they were fun to see. They came around to our table and we got to see all of them, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy. Donald even took the time to sign my Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom card! IMG_0862

Room – The rooms at the Beach Club are always clean and the beds are pretty soft. The pullout couch where I slept was pretty comfortable and it was really easy to fold it up. The rooms are pretty big depending on what kind you get. The Vacation Club rooms have their own special building and it was really nice. It was kind of a long walk at night but we found a shortcut to the bus stop where we didn’t have to go through the hotel. The t.v.’s always have the Disney Channel, which is cool.

Pool – It is the BEST POOL EVER. They have a lazy river, a giant waterslide, and the bottoms of the pools are sand! It’s awesome! There are lots of chairs all around for parents to sit in, but just remember where you are because the pool is so big! There were tons of lifeguards and they were really nice. I asked where to find the lazy river and they answered my questions nicely. Usually lazy rivers are only two or three feet deep but this one goes up to eight feet! Not everyone can get into Stormalong Bay. You have to show them your room card to get a wristband to get in. I thought that was kinda cool because it made it like our private pool.

Resort – I think the resort area is pretty fun. You can walk to Epcot and Hollywood Studios. Epcot is a pretty short walk but Hollywood Studios is definitely a long walk. You can ride a boat to both though, which is fun. The resort area is pretty at night and during the day but I like it at night because you can see all the lights around the Boardwalk and in the lighthouse. There are some good restaurants like Kouzzina, and the Boardwalk Bakery, and ESPN Cafe that you can walk to. My mom wouldn’t let me go to the candy shop, so I can’t tell you if it’s good or not.

I recommend that families stay at this resort because it’s fun for everybody and there are lots of things to do. It’s definitely my favorite.

My Hoop De Doo Revue Review

Some people might think that the Hoop De Doo Revue isn’t for kids, but I went there for Thanksgiving and it was HILARIOUS.

These are the performers and this is what we could see from our seats.

These are the performers and this is what we could see from our seats.

I do think it’s a great place but if you’re a picky eater like I am, it might be hard to eat there. The servers are all very nice and they do everything they can to get you food you like though. I got macaroni and cheese for dinner. I’m not a fan of strawberry shortcake because I don’t like strawberries, so our server brought me cookies. They’re not even on the menu! But if you’re not picky like me, it’s great food and a great show. There’s fried chicken, cornbread, mashed potatoes, beans, and strawberry shortcake.

We sat at the top floor and there were seats that spun around so you could watch the show from the balcony. The singers went around and asked people questions and made funny comments. The show was really good and I liked it.

This is me and my friend Dani watching the show.

You don’t want to get to the show too early because you can’t go inside. We were really early and had to wait in front for a long time and it was pretty boring for us kids.

I think kids will like the Hoop De Doo and families should try it.

A Little About DVC Central Ben

My name is Ben and I’m ten years old. I like to play baseball and lacrosse and I like to go to Disney…a lot. I started a Disney blog because I wanted to tell people about all the fun things to do at Disney from the way a kid sees it. My mom runs a website where she talks about lots of Disney stuff, but sometimes I see it differently. I thought it would be cool to have a site where I can show other kids how much fun it is to try new things at Disney.

Me and my mom at Disney.

Me and my mom at Disney.

On my blog you’ll find all kinds of stuff like restaurant reviews, pool reviews, posts about special events like Mickey’s Not-So-Scary-Halloween-Party, ride reviews, resort reviews, and my opinions about everything from Disney movies to Disney books. It’s my hope that my blog will help kids and parents learn as much about Disney as possible so they can have fun together. Thanks for reading my stuff. -Ben
